Hoxton Street has a vintage shop, a jellied eels counter that has been there for decades, and a market running since 1687. Halfway along it, in a basement with a skylight, is City Vocal Coach. We've been at 128 Hoxton Street, N1 6SH for six years, and the school itself has been teaching adults to sing since 2009. The studio
The first thing most people notice is the light. The studio is in a basement, but a large skylight floods the space with natural light throughout the day, which, combined with the house plants and mid-century modern furniture, gives it a feel that’s more relaxed creative workspace than institutional music school.
Inside there are two fully equipped vocal pods, which means two lessons can run simultaneously without disturbing each other. Teachers have their own space to work, but the studio itself is shared, and most of the time it’s busy. Students arriving for lessons cross paths with students leaving, the same faces appearing week after week. Conversations happen. People get to know each other. It’s one of the things that makes CVC feel different from a one-teacher operation, and it’s hard to manufacture.

Getting here
Hoxton Overground: the most direct route. Hoxton station is a short walk from the studio.
Old Street: around 14 minutes on foot, well signposted through the backstreets.
Liverpool Street: around 26 minutes on foot, or a quicker ride on the 149 or 242 bus, both of which stop on Hoxton Street close to the studio.
Bus from London Bridge: the 149 runs directly to Hoxton Street and stops close to the studio, around a five minute walk away.
Cycling: Lime bikes are available throughout the area and easy to find. If you’re coming on your own bike, you’re welcome to bring it into the studio so it’s safe while you have your lesson.
Parking: there is paid parking outside Hoxton Hall during the week and on Saturdays, though on Saturdays Hoxton Street Market closes the road until the market clears, usually by early evening. Parking on the street itself isn’t possible while the market is running. On Sundays parking is free and you can almost always find a space right outside the studio.
The neighbourhood
Hoxton Street has a character that’s genuinely hard to find elsewhere in London. Within a few doors of the studio you’ll find a vintage store, and a little further down the street a traditional jellied eels shop that’s been there for decades. Continue in either direction and you’re into independent cafes, craft beer bars and a street market that’s been running since 1687. The adjacent streets are home to some of the best Vietnamese restaurants in east London.
The area has changed considerably over the past decade, but it hasn’t lost the mix that makes it interesting. The Museum of the Home is a short walk away on Kingsland Road, a free museum in a set of Grade I-listed almshouses that’s well worth an hour. In summer, the small park on the corner of Stanway Street puts on music and yoga sessions, one of those quietly good neighbourhood things that doesn’t get much attention. For a drink after a lesson, The Howl at the Moon is close by, an Irish pub with a genuine local feel, great Guinness and live music sessions on weekends. Folklore on Hackney Road is an independent venue for live music where we have held some of our student showcases. And on the canal nearby, Towpath is one of London’s best coffee spots, open Wednesday to Sunday from March through November.
As a team we have our own Hoxton tradition: every year we go to the pantomime at Hoxton Hall together. It’s the kind of thing that only makes sense when you’re genuinely rooted in a neighbourhood rather than just based there.
This has always been a part of east London with music running through it, from the original Hoxton club scene of the late nineties to the independent venues and studios that have quietly remained as the area has changed around them. It’s a good place to be learning to sing.
Who comes to CVC
Students come to us from right across east and north London. Shoreditch, Islington, Old Street, Farringdon, Stoke Newington, Dalston and Hackney are all well represented, and a number of students travel in from further afield specifically for our coaches and the community around the school.
What they tend to have in common is that they’re adults who want to sing properly, whether that means total beginners who have never had a lesson, intermediate singers who have hit a ceiling, or more experienced vocalists who want to work with coaches who understand the industry as well as the technique.
Lessons and prices
We offer one-to-one individual singing lessons with foundation and advanced coaches, beginner singing lessons for those starting from scratch, and one-to-one songwriting lessons with Sam Marlow.
Foundation lessons start at £80 per hour. A block of five costs £350 and a block of ten costs £600, working out at £60 per session against £80 for singles. Advanced lessons are £105 per hour. Open mic nights
One of the most distinctive things about City Vocal Coach is what happens beyond the lesson. We run regular open mic nights and student showcases at the Hoxton studio, giving students a real stage to work towards. In sixteen years of teaching we’ve found consistently that students who perform between lessons develop faster than those who don’t. The performance consolidates what the lesson introduces in a way that another lesson simply can’t.
Our Open Mic Ready course is a five-week programme specifically designed to take singers from the practice room to a live performance, in a small group of no more than eight students. It’s the most affordable and one of the most effective ways into CVC.
